From the first time I watched a video of Erika—well before the shooting—I remember having a strong reaction to her presentation style. Something about it struck me as overly polished and performative. I couldn’t quite articulate why at the time, but it felt less like someone speaking naturally and more like someone consciously playing a role.
Part of that impression came from how she framed herself publicly. She leaned heavily into the image of the submissive, dutiful stay-at-home wife, encouraging women to prioritize having children, staying home to raise them, and allowing their husbands to lead while they serve as supportive partners. To be clear, the core principle of parents raising their own children rather than relying heavily on daycare is something I actually agree with. So the issue wasn’t necessarily the values themselves.
What stood out to me was the presentation of those values. It often felt highly curated—almost like a brand or persona rather than an organic reflection of a private individual. When public figures adopt very defined roles like that, it can sometimes create a sense that the audience is seeing a performance rather than the full complexity of a person.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the beliefs are insincere, but it can make the overall impression feel unusual or difficult to read. From the beginning, her public persona struck me that way—carefully constructed and somewhat opaque, which left me with a lingering sense that something about it didn’t fully ring authentic to me.
My spidey senses scream: fake, acting, fame desperate, skilled manipulator and empty.
